An allergist specializes in asthma and sinus disease. Allergists use a non-surgical approach to treat sinusitis, and are experienced in the management of underlying inflammation which causes chronic sinusitis. Looking for allergy triggers, they often work closely with ENT physicians who can offer a surgical method to relieve blockage. Both doctors often work together because allergies originally cause the swelling and blockage of the sinus; even if the surgeon relieves the blocked sinus passageway, new episodes of sinusitis may recur unless the underlying allergy is fully controlled.
